Neighbors have ample control over what property owners can do through enforcement of existing zoning laws. While we contend that the community, the voters and the neighbors shouldn’t be allowed any more control, let’s face it; our neighbors can be our best allies, alerting us to problem guests, property damage and any number of things we’d be happy to know. Most of us have found that the neighbors are very receptive and helpful – some even PREFER to live next to a vacation rental home. Here are just a few suggestions for owners of vacation rental properties:
- Introduce yourself. Neighbors usually love to know a bit about who owns local properties. It helps them to place a name and face with the house next door.
- Be up front with them. Let them know what your plans are with your property.
- Give them a contact phone number and let them know you’re happy to hear about any problem renters. Hey, we don’t want to rent to problem, noisy guests any more than they do.
- Tell ‘em what you love about Dunsmuir and why you’re doing what you’re doing. Maybe you plan to retire here, maybe you just love to stay in your second home whenever you can and the rentals help you with costs.
